DFW Face painters guild Featured Joanna Hathcock!!!!!!
What a treat tonight at the DFW Face Painters guild meeting!!!!!! Joanna Hathcock demonstrated professional make-up techniques on Nicole, my beautiful daughter.........She was informative, talented and creative....her talents are obvious! It was inspiring! Joanna also mentioned that she read a Wolfe Brothers book today to get pumped for her class tonight! Now that was a kick!!!!! I ran home to take these photos to share them with you.
Kudos to Karen Weiss for presenting this great program. What impresses me most is that what we do has basic art techniques but is really applied as a make up. Joanna's "contour" equates to our "shading".
Please check her out....she is WONDERFUL!!!!!!

sharon aka hodge podge the clown
Sharon Hodges, aka “Hodge Podge the Clown”
My life began in earnest in Amarillo, Texas, where I grew up the product of a military family traveling extensively throughout my childhood. I spent three years living in Europe and returned to the US just in time to graduate from high school back in Amarillo, Texas again. I fell into the entertainment and art world by accident eight years ago and have been totally hooked ever since.
I began face painting and doing balloons for tips at a local theater and progressed from there into my clown character “Hodge Podge”, specializing in puppetry, magic, balloon art, and face painting, doing everything from birthday parties to corporate events. In the field of clowning I have earned the 2002 Funny Business Entertainer of the Year award, held various positions on the board of directors for Mid-Cities Clown Alley #85, including president for two years and helped to coordinate the Texas Clown Association Convention, 2001, hosted by Mid-Cities #85.
As my growth as an entertainer has progressed my love of face painting has equally evolved. I have a strong connection with this art form and it is where I feel the most accomplished and comfortable. I have taken several classes from artists in this industry that are considered the best in the world and I attended the first Face Painting International Convention ever held in the US, in Orlando, FL in 2002. I have been an active supporter of the exploration and development of this art form. In 2003 I founded the first organized face painting group in the United States, DFW Face Painters Guild and held the position of president for the year 2003-2004. I am the owner of Enchanted Bodys/Your Enchanted Face, a company that specializes in all forms of face and body art enhanced by professional photography.
I recently competed and received the highest award given at the 2005 Face and Body Art Convention in Orlando, Florida “First Place Best All Around”. I have taught and demonstrated beginning and intermediate levels of face art and constantly strive to personally improve and share the skills and talents that I have. I truly feel that painting is a wonderful way to color our world, one face at a time.

Originally form Colorado, I spent my teenage years in Orlando, FL and went on to college at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. I have worked in the entertainment industry for eighteen years as a production coordinator, executive assistant and an assistant music director for various entertainment companies based in live music, music management, post production and original music composition.
As a chronic workaholic, I decided that I needed a part time job. I soon began working for Enjoy Your Face in Orlando at Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Boardwalk painting faces. I loved working with children and quickly became addicted to the smiles I received for a job well done. My full time job was being relocated to Dallas, TX, so off I went.
I have been painting in the Dallas/Fort Worth market for about four years, including the Texas State Fair for the last 3 years. In recent years I have branched into the body painting and makeup artistry, which I find to be challenging and creative. In addition, I have had the opportunity to paint faces for two Barney® home videos and several Barney and Friends® PBS television shows. Currently I hold the position of secretary for the DFW Face Painters Guild.

leroy roper magazine article
Many people think of the body as an instrument for moving, working, thinking, running, and other physical activities. Others consider the body as a vessel for the soul, spirit, or thought processes. But how many think of the body simply as a canvas for paint, latex, props, and even prosthetics?
In fact, there are a subset of visual artists throughout the world who continue to practice the ancient art of body art and painting. Some of the most prominent names acquired from my limited research are Rich Diltz, Joanne Gair, Sharon Hodges, and Leroy Roper that are located here in the United States. However, there are numerous others who have mastered this amazing art of transforming the body into a canvas as it has been done for thousands of years throughout the world.
Now for those who think that body art is not displayed often in public media such as TV, internet, or even among the regular public, just think of those air brush makeup commercials that continually promise beautiful skin. Consequently, air brush makeup is one of many techniques commonly used in body art and painting. For this reason, many people who start as makeup artists continue their journey into the face and body art arena. As you may imagine, once these lucky individuals begin the journey toward learning or experiencing body art, the options for expression are practically limitless.
Finally, as in other art forms, the process of body art is a transformative experience for all involved including the model, artist, and viewer. For example, Leroy Roper, a renowned painter of the human body and canvases, stated "All of my images tell a story, whether written or unwritten. I will usually title and write poetry or prose to accompany the pictures." In this case, Leroy´s art transforms him into a poet. Carolyn Cowan states "My aim is to inspire you, to elevate you. To encourage you to go beyond all that has been done before." In this case, Carolyn´s art transforms here into a motivator and educator. Seemingly, each of these transformative natures lead to the propulsion of body art as a whole.
Much of the art shown in the image of this article can be found at the listed web addresses. Furthermore, the names of the pictures shown at the bottom of the image from left to right, top to bottom, are Joanne Gair (www.joannegair.com), Sharon Hodges (www.enchantedbodys.com), Leroy Roper (www.leroyroper.com), Rich Diltz (www.secondskinimages.com), and Carolyn Cowan (www.bodypaintingart.co.uk).
The writer, Curtiss Cathey enjoys the artistic endeavors of body art and hopes to expand the public's education and awareness of this beautiful yet forgotten art form. All artwork associated with this article is copyrighted by the persons or websites labeled within the pictures.
